The great strength of Fairtrade is ordinary people doing extraordinary things and by our efforts effecting significant change in the way the world works, for the betterment of Third World Producers and ourselves.

Proposition put to the States of Jersey on March 12th 2004

- Fairtrade helps to tackle poverty by opening up markets to marginalised producers.
- Workers and producers are empowered because they learn how international trade works.
- Fairtrade growers are encouraged to protect their environment or go organic.

1940's: Oxfam in UK starts to sell goods made in disadvantaged communities in Eastern Europe.

Fairtrade is about trade justice for poor farmers and workers in the developing world. Fairtrade terms guarantee fair prices for what the farmer produces, a living wage for workers, decent working conditions, local sustainability, and provisions to improve the health and welfare of farming communities. The Fairtrade price for goods remains stable when market prices fall and rises whenever the market price increases. A Fairtrade Premium is paid to the community at the successful completion of a Fairtrade contract.
