Encouraging the growth of Fairtrade by increasing the knowledge and use of Fairtrade products in Jersey

On Tuesday, September 21st, the long-awaited visit by Harriet Lamb, Chief Executive of the Fairtrade Foundation

began with an informal lunchtime meeting with the local group at the Co-op, Charing Cross. There was a lively debate with David Warr from Cooper & Co.  Then she spoke to a whole school asembly at JCG and to first and second year students at Highlands Academy Restaurant.  She paid a visit to the Oxfam Shop which sells many Fairtrade items.   At her hotel base she was interviewed by Hamish Marett-Crosby.

By 7.30 nearly 100 guests had gathered for 'A Fair  Feast'  in the Assembly Room of the Town Hall. She was welcomed to a buffet with a variety of local produce, from Jersey Diary, Vienna Bakery, scallop shell plates of fish products,  salads from David Blake, Divine chocolate from Wilkinsons, pork pies from John Hackett and of course much wines and juices from the Co-op and coffee from Cooper & Co.  All enjoyed this before Harriet spoke about the progress of Fairtrade in an inspiring talk.  In the audience were chief minister, Terry Le Sueur and his wife and Phil Soulsby and Lydia Grammer from the Guernsey group.  Our Patron Lee Durrell gave a vote of thanks.   Harriet signed copies of her book and presented certificates  to the Co-op and the parish of St. Helier.

On Wednesday September 22nd she was a guest of Sara Palmer on Radio Jersey and paid a visit to Durrell.  Harriet had been inspired by Gerald Durell when she was young.  She attended a business lunch at the Chamber of Commerce, where discussion centred round widening the use of Fairtrade wines, teas and coffees.

Finally she spoke to the 6th form at Hautlieu School before she flew back to London at 4.20.

The warm sunny weather throughout her trip has given her an extra good impression of jersey and the work of the Jersey group!

Now 3 members of the Jersey group will meet her again in London on October 9th for the annual supporters conference.
